Off-Grid Cabin Pole Barn Construction Methods
Meta Description: Learn how to do your own pole barn construction with this easy-to-follow guide. From digging holes to raising the roof, we’ll show you exactly what to do.
Introduction
Ready to build a pole barn cabin? This guide breaks down every step so you can understand exactly what to do. We’ll focus on constructing the basic shell – that’s the foundation, walls, and roof. Think of it like building a giant sturdy box that will become your cabin.
Getting Started With The Foundation
Before anything else, you’ll need to prepare where you’re going to build.
Step 1: Mark Your Building Site
- Drive stakes into the ground at each corner where you want your cabin
- Run string between stakes to make a rectangle
- Check that opposite sides are equal length
- Make sure corners are square using the 3-4-5 method:
- Measure 3 feet along one string
- Measure 4 feet along the connecting string
- The diagonal between these points should be exactly 5 feet
- If not, adjust your strings until it is
Step 2: Dig The Post Holes
- Mark spots for holes every 8 feet along your string lines
- Dig holes:
- Make them 24 inches wide
- Go down at least 4 feet (or below your local frost line)
- Make the bottom wider than the top
- Add 6 inches of gravel to each hole for drainage
Setting The Posts
Posts are your cabin’s backbone – they need to be straight and strong.
Step 3: Prepare Your Posts
- Choose pressure-treated 6×6 posts
- Cut all posts to the same height (typical wall height plus 4 feet for ground)
- Mark a line 4 feet up from bottom of each post – this is your ground level line
Step 4: Install The Posts
- Drop a post into each hole
- Brace it with 2x4s on two sides
- Pour concrete around post:
- Mix concrete following package directions
- Fill hole about 1/3 full
- Check post is plumb (straight up and down) with a level
- Add more concrete until hole is full
- Let concrete cure for 48 hours before removing braces
Building The Walls
Now you’ll connect those posts to make walls.
Step 5: Install Base Girts
- Attach 2×6 boards horizontally between posts at ground level
- Use 4-inch lag screws to attach to posts
- Make sure boards are level before tightening
Step 6: Add Wall Girts
Attach 2x4s horizontally between posts:
- Start 2 feet up from ground
- Space them every 2 feet going up
- Nail or screw securely to each post
Step 7: Frame Openings
For doors and windows:
- Cut out girts where openings will be
- Add double 2×6 headers above openings
- Install additional 2×4 studs on sides of openings
Building The Roof Frame
The roof keeps everything dry and holds it all together.
Step 8: Install The Top Plate
- Put 2×6 boards across top of all posts
- Level them perfectly
- Bolt them securely to each post
Step 9: Add Roof Trusses
- Order pre-made trusses to fit your building
- Space them every 4 feet
- Installing trusses:
- Lift each truss into place (you’ll need help!)
- Nail hurricane ties to connect trusses to top plate
- Add diagonal bracing between trusses
Step 10: Add Roof Purlins
1. Nail 2x4s across top of trusses:
- Start at peak
- Space them 2 feet apart
- Run them perpendicular to trusses
Adding The Exterior Cover
This is what makes your building weather-tight.
Step 11: Install Metal Roofing
- Start at bottom edge
- Overlap sheets by one ridge
- Use special roofing screws with rubber washers
- Put screws in every other ridge
Step 12: Add Wall Metal
- Start at a corner
- Keep sheets plumb (straight up and down)
- Overlap edges by one ridge
- Screw into girts every 2 feet
Conclusion
Building a pole barn cabin takes time and careful attention to detail. Follow these steps in order, and don’t rush. Remember to check everything is level and plumb as you go. Take extra time with the foundation and posts – they’re the most important part.
